Capillary‐bridge forces between solid particles: Insights from lattice Boltzmann simulations

چکیده
Liquid capillary-bridge formation between solid particles has a critical influence on the rheological properties of granular materials and, in particular, efficiency fluidized bed reactors. The available analytical and semi-analytical methods have inherent limitations, often do not cover important aspects, like presence non-axisymmetric bridges. Here, we conduct numerical simulations capillary bridge equally unequally-sized using lattice Boltzmann method, provide an assessment accuracy different families models. We find that some models taken into account are shown to perform better than others. However, all them fail predict force for contact angles larger $\pi/2$, where repulsive attempts push particle outwards minimize surface energy, especially at small separation distance.

Efficient lattice Boltzmann simulations of self-propelled particles with singular forces
e motion of microorganisms presents interesting and dicult problems ranging from mechanisms of propulsion to collective eects. Experimentally, some of the complicating factors, such as death, reproduction, chemotaxis, etc., can be suppressed through genetic manipulation or environmental control. Nonequilibrium statistical mechanics has been used to study simple models, however proceeding anal...
متن کاملLattice Boltzmann simulations of anisotropic particles at liquid interfaces
Complex colloidal fluids, such as emulsions stabilized by particles with complex shapes, play an important role in many industrial applications. However, understanding their physics requires a study at sufficiently large length scales while still resolving the microscopic structure of a large number of particles and of the local hydrodynamics. Due to its high degree of locality, the lattice Bol...

It is a pleasure and a privilege to contribute to this volume recognizing the important contributions of Prof. Jean-Pierre Hansen FRS to the field of molecular simulation. My first encounter with Jean-Pierre was through the marvelous (and at that time singular) textbook on molecular simulations he caoauthored with Ian McDonald [1]. At that time, part of my thesis work involved simulating three-...
متن کاملParallelizing Solid Particles in Lattice-Boltzmann Fluid Dynamics
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a widely used numerical method for simulating complex systems, with applications ranging from aerodynamic science to hydrology. The latticeBoltzmann method is a relatively recent technique that has been shown to be as accurate as traditional CFD methods, but with the ability to integrate arbitrarily complex geometries at a reduced computational cost. Althou...
متن کاملGalilean invariant fluid-solid interfacial dynamics in lattice Boltzmann simulations
Galilean invariance is a fundamental property; however, although the lattice Boltzmann equation itself is Galilean invariant, this property is usually not taken into account in the treatment of the fluid-solid interface. Here, we show that consideration of Galilean invariance in fluid-solid interfacial dynamics can greatly enhance the computational accuracy and robustness in a numerical simulat...
